Speaker blocks call for EU treaty vote

A band of Labour rebels were denied a chance to vote against their own party last night after an amendment calling for a referendum on the controversial Lisbon treaty was struck down at the behest of the Commons speaker.

The challenge to Gordon Brown was thwarted as the government embarked on a marathon series of debates over the treaty, which are likely to take up to 20 days of parliamentary time.
