Westpac talks spur bank gains

Australia’s equity market outperformed the rest of the region on Monday as bank stocks were lifted by Westpac’s announcement that it had begun merger discussions with St George.

A deal would create the country’s biggest bank with a market value of about A$65bn, and prompted speculation about further consolidation in the sector.
