Israeli minister offers to talk to Hamas

A senior Israeli minister has offered to negotiate directly with Hamas to secure the release of a soldier held captive for almost two years by the Islamist group in the Gaza Strip.

The move by Eli Yishai, trade minister and leader of the religious Shas party, came during a meeting with Jimmy Carter, the former US president, who is visiting the region to urge dialogue between Hamas and Israel.
