HMV’s oligarch

An oligarch alert at HMV, where Alexander Mamut has appeared on the shareholder register with a 3 per cent stake.

A trained lawyer, the 40-year-old is better known in Russia as a corporate wheeler-dealer. In 2007, his start-up, SUP, acquired LiveJournal, the US blog portal, while a year later he purchased Russia’s biggest handset retailer only to sell it to mobile operator Vimpelcom a few months later. He has hobnobbed with fellow tycoon Roman Abramovich and counts football as one of his hobbies.
