The Marriott in County Hall, the venue for Whitbread boss Alan Parker’s leaving bash, took him down memory lane.
Mr Parker – who has been with Whitbread for 18 years, six as chief executive – recalled the time he had just signed the deal for a £35m ($56.4m) investment to develop a Marriott and Travel Inn on the premises. There was widespread amusement when his chairman, Anthony Habgood, noted that under Mr Parker “Premier Inn has ground its nearest competitors into the dust” as Travelodge’s Grant Hearn and Guy Parsons, who were among the 120 guests present, were very much upright.
