Banks face ban or price caps on loan insurance

Leading banks that offer loan insurance products face the threat of price caps or a total ban on selling after a stinging competition watchdog report yesterday claimed they were making £39 excess profit on every £100 of business.

Consumer groups welcomed the findings as a long overdue assault on a rotten business, but the banking industry warned that undermining the market could leave people without protection when they were unable to pay debts because of unemployment or illness.
