Gordon Brown has lost the “confidence and trust” of business in less than a year as prime minister, according to the stark assessment of the EEF, the manufacturers’ trade body.

Martin Temple, whose nine years as a former director-general and now chair of the EEF span most of Labour’s time in power, said the catalyst for the loss of business faith in the prime minister was last autumn’s pre-Budget report.
