Ten thousand refugees resettle in America every year through the International Rescue Committee — to lives filled with unexpected challenges and difficulties.

Manar, Suk, Lydie, Amar and Zemrushe fled conflicts in Iraq, Bhutan, Rwanda and Kosovo to live in America. At Parkview Gardens Apartments in Riverdale, Maryland, they share the same struggles — learning English, finding a job, coming to terms with their past.

The FT will tell their stories in an online feature — as well as in its weekend magazine — as part of our 2014 seasonal appeal in support of the International Rescue Committee.
