Scottish fishermen were yesterday given the green light to catch more cod next year after a decade of cuts, in return for their pioneering approach to conserving the fragile stock.
The landmark agreement with Brussels allows Scotland to spare fishermen cuts in their fishing time if they adopt conservation measures. The North Sea cod quota was increased 11 per cent, the first rise in a decade, while days at sea were reduced 10 per cent at Scotland's discretion.
