Ashdown lined up as Afghan super-envoy

Paddy Ashdown, formerly the European Union-United Nations high representative in Bosnia, has been offered a new post as a joint UN-Nato envoy in Afghanistan, as part of efforts to fashion a common strategy for the war-torn country.

The role, yet to be accepted by Lord Ashdown, is intended to fill a vacuum that has worried political leaders for more than a year.
