UK migration data ‘not fit for purpose’

The government’s migration figures are “not fit for purpose” and an overhaul of the statistical system for producing key population data is essential, a parliamentary committee will say this week.

Sir Michael Fallon MP, chair of the Treasury sub-committee overseeing official statistics, said that the annual population figures produced by the Office for National Statistics failed to show the true scale of ­immigration.
