Not-for-profit sector ineffective, say MPs

Compelling evidence does not exist that shows the voluntary and not-for-profit sector provides public services in ways that improve outcomes, despite the government’s insistence that it does and ministers’ efforts to increase public service provision by the sector, a Commons committee has said.

Boosting the third sector’s role in public services has been a popular theme for Gordon Brown, both as chancellor and as prime minister.
