Turkey turns against YouTube

The decision last week by a judge in Istanbul to shut down access to YouTube from Turkey had a legal and a political dimension.

On the legal front, the Turkish penal code has articles that make it a criminal offence to criticise, insult or otherwise denigrate Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the nation’s founder. The laws are implemented assiduously.
