Waste wars trash Naples’ image

On both sides of the barricades in Naples, where residents have clashed nightly with police over where to put thousands of tonnes of rubbish, there is a strong sense that something has gone badly wrong in Italy.

Protesters and police alike tell of the shame they feel, comparing the stench and chaos of their United Nations-recognised world heritage city with shabby corners of Asia or Africa.
