For Jeff Zucker, chief executive of NBC Universal, the recent Hollywood writers' strike represented a disruption, but also an opportunity.

The labour strife has caused a sharp fall in television viewing for NBC and other networks. Yet Mr Zucker, 42, seized on it to try to break with the past and overhaul the way in which NBC makes and markets television programmes.
