Discount stores in US gain ground

New sales figures from the leading US retailers on Thursday painted a picture of stressed shoppers “trading down” and focusing increasingly on price in the face of growing economic pressures.

Monthly sales data for February showed Wal-Mart, the low-cost mass discounter, again outperforming its more upmarket rivals, reporting a 2.6 per cent increase in sales at stores open at least a year.
