The red gates of China's embassy in Kyrgyzstan swing open to reveal a spacious office and residential compound, writes Isabel Gorst in Bishkek. The opening of the embassy in March served as a statement of China's confidence in Kyrgyzstan. But chaos since the overthrow of the government of Kurmanbek Bakiyev in April has undermined Beijing's plans to develop the country as a trading corridor on the ancient Silk Road.
