State must lead Severn tidal scheme

A plan to build the UK’s first tidal energy scheme must be led by the state if it is to be commercially competitive, the government’s independent watchdog on sustainable development said on Monday.

The proposed 16km tidal barrage across the mouth of the Severn estuary could provide 5 per cent of the UK’s electricity needs and would be a significant boost in helping to meet carbon reduction targets.
