Germany can no longer expect to avoid damage from the mounting global economic storms, with a “significant fall” in economic growth likely in 2009, Angela Merkel warned on Wednesday.
The German chancellor said a “clear economic slowdown” appeared unavoidable and that recent falls in unemployment in Europe’s largest economy would also come to an end. “The economic context in which we are operating is certainly not getting easier,” she said.
