Fed rate cut helps shore up investor confidence

Global stock markets rallied strongly yesterday as a cut in US interest rates and better quarterly earnings than expected from investment banks Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers helped shore up sagging investor confidence.

The Federal Reserve lowered the Fed funds rate by 75 basis points to 2.25 per cent, disappointing many investors who had been hoping for a full percentage point cut. Two members of the Federal Open Market Committee wanted less aggressive action.
