Defiant UMP gives Sarkozy humiliating rebuff

Barely a year after Nicolas Sarkozy led it to convincing victories in presidential and parliamentary elections, France’s centre-right UMP party has fallen out of love with its former hero.

Lawmakers from the president’s party this week delivered him a humiliating rebuff by allowing the opposition socialists to defeat a controversial law on the licensing of genetically modified crops.
