From The Lord Mayor of London.
Sir, The deficit of diversity in Britain’s top companies can be ignored no longer: it is hurting Britain’s businesses (“Male and pale boardrooms still the norm, report warns”, February 10). As only the second female Lord Mayor since 1189, I believe banging the drum for equality of opportunity is crucial to ensuring we develop a truly meritocratic society where we can be confident that the best and the brightest from all backgrounds are reaching the top. Trevor Phillips’ research showed that the “talent pipeline” is filled with potential – now we must work together to push the wave further up the beach – not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it makes business sense. Capturing the benefits of diversity will drive the innovation we need to be at the cutting edge.
Fiona Woolf, Lord Mayor of the City of London
