Top 10: Kneipen (Pubs)

1. Obst & Gemüse

A classic among the new drinking establishments in Berlin Mitte, this pub is always full to bursting with its never-ending stream of guests. Obst & Gemüse (fruit & vegetables), which thrives on nostalgia for life in the former East Germany, is based in a former grocer's shop selling "southern fruits". Most of the patrons sit at long tables outside or stand in large crowds in the street.

2. Mitte-Bar

Despite its name, this bar is a Kneipe, where in the summer you can enjoy a cold beer or one of the inexpensive cocktails outdoors. Frequented by a young and trendy crowd who love to make a noise, the bar serves some of the best cocktails in Berlin.

3. Hackbarths

Friendly Hackbarths is a corner pub frequented by trendy students, local artists and tourists. From 6pm, the locals gather here in jovial mood and are always ready to strike up conversation over a glass of Berliner Weie (sour beer with a shot of raspberry or woodruff syrup). In the summer, the pavement serves as a makeshift extension of the pub.

4. E. & M. Leydicke

This slightly dated winery is still a big hit with tourists as well as groups of pupils and students. Try the sweetish strawberry and raspberry wines.

5. Morena-Bar

With its walls completely covered with Spanish tiles, this bar draws an upmarket Kreuzberg crowd as well as students who like to meet here for a beer. At weekends it is full to bursting and gets livelier by the hour.

6. Zum Nußbaum

One of only a few traditional pubs in the historic Nikolaiviertel worth checking out, the Nubaum serves draught beer and traditional Berlin food.

7. Zwiebelfisch

A classic of the ageing Charlottenburg scene, this is where the last survivors of the 1968 generation prop up the bar and reminisce about the great days of the revolution in West Berlin. The artists in the photographs on the walls are all past clients, many of them from the 1968 generation. In the summer, there are tables outdoors on Savignyplatz - great for people-watching and taking in the scene.

8. Diener-Tattersaal

An atmospheric pub popular with local actors, serving draught beers and traditional German and Austrian fare. The pub bears the name of Franz Diener, the legendary boxer who knocked out the erstwhile boxing world champion, Max Schmeling.

9. Café am Neuen See

The only Berlin Kneipe that is also a café. The "Italian breakfast" is opulent and delicious. In summer, crowds gather in the vast beer garden. Customers bring their own food to grill and sit at the long tables, chatting over a local beer.

10. Dralle's

One of the pub hotspots in the 1980s, Dralle's has become more sedate in recent years, but media people and trendy business students still meet up in this rockabilly pub, which is decorated entirely in red.
