Top 10: Best Places to Eat

1. Vau

The best of international and Austrian cooking is served by Kolja Kleeberg at the stylishly designed Vau. The restaurant has been awarded a well-deserved Michelin star.

2. Kaiserstuben

Opposite the Pergamonmuseum, this restaurant is one of the best new upmarket restaurants in Berlin, offering traditional German fare of the highest quality, but at top prices. Try one of the set menus - they are more reasonably priced and still of the highest standard.

3. Margaux

A newcomer among the gastronomical stars, the Margaux is Berlin's most elegant restaurant, popular with celebrities as well as food-lovers who enjoy its French or German nouvelle cuisine and its successful new interpretations of classic dishes. Michael Hoffmann, the chef, is particularly renowned for his fish and seafood dishes. The wine list includes over 800 top wines.

4. E. T. A. Hoffmann

Based in the Hotel Riehmers Hofgarten, this restaurant has risen to the top of Berlin's gastronomical establishments - largely due to its surprising new creations.

5. Borchardt

Everyone of importance, including the Chancellor himself, dines at Borchardt. The historic room is furnished in Wilhelminian style (featuring tall columns, wall mosaics and tiles flooring) - an appropriate setting for the classic French cooking. Without a reservation, however, even top politicians can't get a table.

6. First Floor

This top gourmet restaurant, specializing in the creation of new German dishes, is a well-guarded secret. The menu features traditional Berlin fare such as eisbein mit sauerkraut (pork knuckle with sauerkraut) as well as new creations using fish, langoustines and truffles. The specials of the day are more moderately priced; you are well advised to book a table in advance.

7. Seasons

8. Adermann

An elegant restaurant on the first floor of an old town house in the centre of Scheunenviertel. Note the dressers and the parquet flooring. Especially worth trying are the light, French-style fish dishes.

9. Lutter & Wegner Gendarmenmarkt

In this old building, formerly the Berliner Sektkellerei (supposedly the place where sparkling wine, or sekt, was invented), Austrian cuisine is the star. Try the best wiener schnitzel in town, accompanied by a classic warm potato salad, at consistently low prices. In the summer, there are tables outdoors.

10. Ana e Bruno

Ana e Bruno's is one of the best restaurants in Berlin, and certainly serves the best Italian food in the city. Don't be shocked when you see the menu: the numbers refer to the calories in a dish rather than to the price - although these are also at the top end.
