Composite of 12 US economic measurements compiled by the US Commerce Department.

inflation
General increase in prices.

inheritance tax
UK tax charged on the passing of wealth from oneperson to another, either during life or at death.

insider dealing or trading
Illegal exploitation of confidential information in order to make a profit or avoid a loss on stockmarket transactions.

insolvency
Occurs when individuals or businesses do not haveenough resources to cover their debts, or cannot pay their debts whenthey are due.

intangible assets
Assets that do not have a physical existence. Includes goodwill, patents, copyrights, tradmarks, formulae, capitalised advertising costs, etc.

institutional investor
Large financial institution, such as an insurance company, pension fund, unit trust or investment trust.

insurance broker
Specialised broker who secures insurance business and places it with recognised underwriters.

interest payable
A current liability. Represents the amount of interest that is due to be paid within one year.

interim results
Interim figures giving an indication of trading andprofit performance since the last full year accounting period; generally announced for six month periods by non-US companies andquarterly for US companies.

inventories
A current asset. Includes the value of items acquired forresale or manufactured, work in progress and raw materials. Otherwiseknown as stocks.

investment trust
Company that uses its shareholders' funds to own and manage a portfolio of stocks and shares for profit. Investment trusts are 'closed-end', ie, shareholders wishing to extract their funds have to sell their shares to another investor, unlike with unit trusts which can create or redeem units in response to demand.

Investors’ Compensation Scheme
Statutory scheme operated by the Securities and Investment Board in the UK to give individual investors some financial recompense if an authorised investment business collapses.

invisible income
Foreign income from sources other than the movement of goods; it includes earnings from tourism, banking, shipping,insurance and investment.
